• Course Title: POCUS Cardiac Hands-On Training
• Duration: 2 Days (16 Hours Total)
• Format: In-person (Supervised Practical Training)
• Language: English / Spanish
• Level: Beginner to Intermediate
• Instructor:
Dr. Alexandra Maritza Escalona
Cardiologist & Echocardiography Specialist
This intensive hands-on training is designed to provide participants with practical skills in cardiac point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). The course focuses on real-time image acquisition, recognition of cardiac anatomy, interpretation of sonographic findings, and integration into clinical decision-making. The program is aligned with the educational standards of the POCUS Certification Academy and prepares participants for clinical application and certification pathways.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
• Perform standard cardiac POCUS views (PLAX, PSAX, Apical, Subcostal)
• Optimize ultrasound settings (gain, depth, focus)
• Identify normal cardiac anatomy
• Recognize key sonographic patterns and artifacts
• Assess left ventricular function qualitatively
• Identify pericardial effusion and signs of tamponade
• Recognize signs of right heart strain
• Apply POCUS in shock assessment
DAY 1: FUNDAMENTALS + IMAGE ACQUISITION(8 HOURS)
Morning Session (Theory + Demo)
• Ultrasound physics applied to cardiac imaging
• Machine controls and optimization
• Probe orientation and positioning
• Introduction to cardiac POCUS protocol
Core Cardiac Views:
• Parasternal Long Axis (PLAX)
• Parasternal Short Axis (PSAX)
• Apical 4-Chamber
• Subcostal view
Afternoon Session (Hands-On Practice)
• Supervised scanning practice
• Correct probe placement
• Image acquisition techniques
• Identification of normal anatomy
DAY 2: INTERPRETATION + CLINICAL
APPLICATION (8 HOURS)
Morning Session (Clinical Integration)
• Left ventricular function assessment
• Right ventricular evaluation
• Pericardial effusion vs tamponade
• Hypovolemia vs fluid overload
• Cardiac POCUS in shock
